F
eatured item is from the western U.S. goldfields. This small chip sample consists mostly of greenish serpentine. Both sides show countless crystals of high-purity gold with rusty oxidation mixed in. It's not large and you're not getting your money's worth in gold, but, as native minerals go, it's authentic - the real deal. It comes from California. Weight is 4 Grains (Troy) or .26 Gram (for those who prefer metric).
All the miners I hung out with back in the 1980s preferred weighing their gold by the Troy system. What we have here, basically, is a chip of very high-grade gold ore.
If you've an interest in such esoterica, this is cool. You won't find it at Wally's World, that's for sure.

A
s founder of this store, I actively mined gold for 18+ years. This time included thirteen years working underwater beneath various suction dredges. As an itinerant miner, when winter closed it's icy grip on the mountains of the north, I flew south with the rest of the snowbird flock. Your first question will probably be, how did I do? To be honest, the sum total of gold produced was disappointing. During my best seasons, I pulled in around twenty ounces. That wouldn't have been too bad if gold had been worth what it is today. Of course, every miner hopes to find more than they wind up with. More often than not, the gold recovered was 'fugitive gold'; gold the old-time miners, for one reason or another, had somehow overlooked or lost. Still, each and every claim brought with it a new adventure, another challenge. One might say it wasn't working at all since I enjoyed what I was doing so much. Being able to avoid troubles, discomforts, breakdowns, and assorted difficulties weighs heavily into the pleasure-misery equation.
Beginning long ago, perhaps in a past life, something about the mysterious element known as gold drew me to it. That's a fancier way of saying that from the time I can first remember, gold, and the hunt for it was forever invading my dreams. Hard-wired as it was into my DNA, how this came about is beyond me, but hunting for Au (gold), working with it, and marketing it became my life-way. I hope this passion shows. If, like myself, you're a fan of gold, there's a lot to see at
Gold of Eldorado
.
The gold contained in my specimens is not pure 24K because absolutely pure gold is never found in nature. The gold you see here is an alloy of metals created by the mysterious, dynamic forces within planet earth. It's theorized that gold was brought here by impacting asteriods. Considering how the planets in our solar system were made (i.e. essentially, by the coalescing of meteorites and stardust), this seems logical. Obviously, a lot of pretty cool geological and astronomical stuff can happen in 4.5 billion plus years. There are many these days, obviously, who will refute and dispute anything the science community contends. The purity of the gold contained in these tiny rocks, in most cases, is quite high, at least 80% gold (800 fine) or higher. For what it's worth, 5600 Ebay customers believed enough in my products to become patrons. Not one single item was returned due to non-authenticity. After doing business here for over fifteen years, my customer feedback remains 100% positive. Many years spent actively mining for gold as a dredger, detectorist, and drywasherman imparted a fair amount of knowledge on the subject. Dealing with honorable miners, claim and property owners, and all-around good folks imparted an ethic of trying to treat people right. In the item offered, you will not be getting your money's worth in gold bullion. The value of gold quartz specimens is more as a mineral collectible and curiosity. You are wise to be cautious because "all that glitters is not gold." I have purchased every manner of faux specimen imaginable on this website.

GO WHERE THE GOLD IS
As for going for the gold, it’s always advisable to go
where the gold is, but after
mining for 18 years and only rarely finding copious amounts of
this viral metal,
I came to the conclusion the chief
culprit responsible for my repeated
failures was fundamental 'lack of access'. Every
gold-bearing region is different,
each with (more or less) it’s own history
with regards to past discoveries and earlier mining
activity. Written accounts, however, are not
necessarily complete or accurate. Occasionally, recorded activities, geology, and mineralogy, along with production statistics are fairly comprehensive, but not usually. An
auriferous region may contain hundreds if not
thousands of individual mining
claims of anywhere from 20 acres up to 160 acres each. Old patented mine sites can be appreciably more spacious in area. Specific sites with the highest-potential
for future significant discoveries within such extensive areas
are known mostly by
site-specific records of past production
and, to a lesser degree,
by an oral record passed down
by miners themselves, relatives of those miners, or local
residents ‘in the
know’.
O
ne thing for sure. It's impossible to
find gold where
you're not allowed to look. Many
of the
richest mines in proven gold
districts
were patented and now lie on privately-owned land.
Gaining access to such lands to prospect for gold is always a
possibility however remote a one it may be.
One cannot say for certain what is or isn’t available to mine if they don’t investigate all the possibilities.
Areas which hold the greatest
promise and are still on federally-administered (i.e. Forest Service and B.L.M.)
land
or state-administered lands are often held by entities
who
own the mineral rights to
these claims. In every scenario mentioned up
to now, you would need permission
to access those properties. To search in
such places without permission
constitutes what is known in the lexicon as
‘claim jumping’. While still an ongoing
activity,
it is an illegal option
not
worthy of further discussion here.
